Postpartum Recovery Kit Essentials: 10 Must-Haves for Comfort & Care

The early days and weeks after giving birth are filled with sweet snuggles and joyful moments with your newborn. However, the postpartum period can also be physically and emotionally demanding as your body recovers and you adjust to life with a completely dependent little one.

Having the right tools on hand to navigate challenges can make all the difference.

One of the best things to have in your new-parent “tool box” is a well stocked postpartum recovery kit. You can buy some pre-made kits that have a lot of great items already included in them like this one from Mama Frida. However, it can also be just as easy and way more tailored to your unique likes and needs to put a recovery kit together yourself.

Although each birthing experience is unique, these 10 items I have compiled for you offer universal support every birthing parent needs during the fourth trimester:

Staying Clean and Comfortable with Absorbent Feminine-Care Products

Bleeding and discharge after delivery (called lochia) can last up to 6 weeks postpartum. Having ultra-absorbent pads, disposable/mesh underwear, and/or postpartum panties in your postpartum recovery kit ensures you have what you need to stay clean, dry, and comfortable as your body heals.

Relieve Discomfort With Pain Relievers

Whether it’s cramps, contractions, stitches, or general soreness, pain after labor is common. Stocking your kit with over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen gives you options for relief when needed. If breastfeeding, consult your provider for safe options. It is also helpful to have ice (for the first 24-48 hours post-birth for swelling) and a heating pad, hot-water bottle, or rice sock warmer to provide non-medicated relief. Consider having a perineum spray or cream on hand for more localized relief.

Cleanse Gently With Skin-Friendly Essentials

The hormonal shifts of postpartum can leave skin dry and sensitive. Not to mention the sore birthing wounds your body is working hard to heal. When bathing, opt for gentle, fragrance-free soaps and lotions. Soothing witch hazel pads also provide comfort for your mending tissues.

Get Cozy Support With High-Waist Underwear & Pants

Instead of irritating your c-section incision or putting pressure on your sore abdomen, high-waist undies and pants provide comfort and protection. Choose breathable, stretchy fabrics that don’t rub or dig in. You deserve to feel comfy and confident!

Nurse in Comfort With a Lactation-Friendly Bra

If breast/chestfeeding, nursing bras allow easy access for feedings while providing support. Choose wire-free, well-fitting and breathable styles with clasps for convenience. Having a hands-free pumping bra is clutch too.

Gently Cleanse With a Peri Bottle

Peri bottles simplify the delicate process of cleansing your perineum after using the bathroom. Warm water and angled spouts prevent irritation and stinging of healing tissues. I highly recommend going for an inverted peri bottle for your postpartum recovery kit so you can spray at any angle and avoid messes. A must-have for comfort!

Energize Your Body With Nutrient-Dense Snacks

Nourishing your body is crucial post-delivery, especially if breastfeeding/chestfeeding. Stock nutrient-rich snacks, meaning high in protein, fat, and vitamins/minerals, to refuel, aid healing, support your fluctuating hormones, and so much more. Staying hydrated is key too.

Soothe & Mend With Sitz Bath

Sitz baths are wonderful for alleviating pain and promoting healing of the perineal area. Epsom salt provides additional relief from swelling. Portable plastic tubs that attached to the toilet are easy to use without the hassle of filling a bathtub.

Get Comfortable With a Nursing Pillow

A structured nursing pillow optimizes your posture during feedings to reduce back and neck strain. The right positioning also aids effective latching for your baby. Added bonus – it helps support your belly while recovering!

Support Your C-Section Recovery with a Belly Binder

A belly binder is a gentle yet effective tool that provides targeted support to your abdominal area, protects your sensitive incision, helps stabilize your core as it recovers, and can help improve your posture.  aiding in your healing process and overall well-being.

While every postpartum experience is unique, proactively preparing your recovery kit allows you to focus on the amazing moments ahead rather than scrambling to gather supplies. Surround yourself with tools to nourish, comfort and heal!
